Robust Approach to Certify Quantum Devices

An international team including CQT researchers has come up with a "robust and versatile" scheme for doing quality testing of quantum devices. The scheme is described in a 22 July paper in Physical Review Letters.

An international research team, led by Dr. Yuji Harada from Planetary Science institute, China University of Geosciences, has found that there is an extremely soft layer deep inside the Moon and that heat is effectively generated in the layer by the gravity of the Earth.

Rosetta Spacecraft Rendezvous with Comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko

After a decade-long journey chasing its target, the European Space Agency's Rosetta, carrying three NASA instruments, became the first spacecraft to rendezvous with a comet. The last of a series of 10 rendezvous maneuvers that began in May, to adjust Rosetta's speed and trajectory to gradually match those of comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko, occurred today (Aug. 6, 2014).

X-ray Laser with Attosecond Timing Resolution Helps Take Snapshots of Electrons Zipping Around Atoms

Researchers at the Department of Energy's SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory have developed a laser-timing system that could allow scientists to take snapshots of electrons zipping around atoms and molecules. Taking timing to this new extreme of speed and accuracy at the Linac Coherent Light Source X-ray laser, a DOE Office of Science user facility, will make it possible to see the formative stages of chemical reactions.

Particle accelerators, like the Cornell Electron Storage Ring (CESR), are involved in fields ranging from cancer research to archaeology, art and chemistry. New interdisciplinary research on a part of the accelerator called the photocathode by physics graduate student Siddharth Karkare has the potential to dramatically improve accelerator performance.
