Scientists Examine Detailed "Time Lapse" X-Ray Image of Expansion of GK Persei Nova Explosion

Scientists in a collaboration led by Dai Takei of the RIKEN SPring-8 Center in Japan have, for the first time, examined a detailed 'time lapse' X-ray image of the expansion of a classical nova explosion using the GK Persei nova -- a binary star system which underwent a nova explosion in 1901.

Four Brookhaven Lab Scientists Honored as American Physical Society Fellows

Four scientists who have made significant contributions to ongoing research at the U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE) Brookhaven National Laboratory were among those recently named Fellows of the American Physical Society (APS), the world's second-largest organization of physicists. Election to APS Fellowship is limited to no more than one half of one percent of its membership in a given year, and election for this honor indicates recognition by scientific peers for exceptional contributions to physics.

NASA's Magnetospheric Multiscale Spacecraft Positioned to Study Magnetic Reconnection

Following a successful launch at 10:44 p.m. EDT Thursday, NASA's four Magnetospheric Multiscale (MMS) spacecraft are positioned in Earth's orbit to begin the first space mission dedicated to the study of a phenomenon called magnetic reconnection. This process is thought to be the catalyst for some of the most powerful explosions in our solar system.
