Muon-Based Technology for Imaging Nuclear Fuel Debris Inside Fukushima Dai-Ichi Reactor

Toshiba Corporation and the International Research Institute for Nuclear Decommissioning (IRID) today announced the development of a muon[1]-based technology for imaging and mapping nuclear fuel debris inside the reactor pressure vessel (RPV) of the Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Plant. The system was developed as the part of sub-project for “Development of Fuel Debris Sensing Technology for Nuclear Reactors” financed by the Agency for Natural Resources and Energy.

Simulation Proves Effect of Galactic Rocket Engine in Galaxy Collisions

Cosmic accidents are frequent occurrences in space: two or more disk galaxies collide and form elliptical systems. These contain regions in which the stars orbit the centre in precisely the opposite direction to what happens in the rest of the galaxy. Previous attempts to explain this assumed the colliding galaxies had a special relative orientation (“retrograde”). Athanasia Tsatsi, a doctoral student at the Max Planck Institute for Astronomy in Heidelberg, has now found a further possibility: the mass loss of the galaxies involved acts as a kind of huge rocket engine.

Muons in Stishovite Exist as Muoniums with a Captured Electron in Interstitial Positions

A research group led by Associate Professor Nobumasa Funamori, Department of Earth and Planetary Science, Graduate School of Science, University of Tokyo, along with research groups specialized in high-pressure Earth science and muon science, including the Institute of Materials Structure Science, jointly studied the condition of muons (µ+, mu particles) implanted in stishovite, a high-pressure phase of quartz, using the muon spin rotation method, and found that muons exist in interstitial positions in the form of muoniums with a captured electron.
