New Planck Maps Show Entire Sky in ‘Polarised’ Light from the Early Universe

New maps from ESA’s Planck satellite show the entire sky in the ‘polarised’ light from the early Universe, revealing that the first stars formed approx. 100 million years later than previously thought. They also shed new light onto our own Milky Way, whose dust reveals spectacular views of Galactic magnetic fields. Researchers at the Max Planck Institute for Astrophysics have developed important software components for Planck and were intensively involved in evaluation the scientific interpretation of the mission data.

Astronomers Discover Close Pair of White Dwarf Stars

The team of astronomers, led by Miguel Santander-García (Observatorio Astronómico Nacional, Alcalá de Henares, Spain; Instituto de Ciencia de Materiales de Madrid (CSIC - http://www.icmm.csic.es/), Madrid, Spain), has discovered a close pair of white dwarf stars -- tiny, extremely dense stellar remnants -- that have a total mass of about 1.8 times that of the Sun. This is the most massive such pair yet found [1] and when these two stars merge in the future they will create a runaway thermonuclear explosion leading to a Type Ia supernova [2].

New research from UCL and the Universities of Gdansk, Singapore, and Delft has uncovered additional second laws of thermodynamics which complement the ordinary second law of thermodynamics, one of the most fundamental laws of nature. These new second laws are generally not noticeable except on very small scales, at which point, they become increasingly important.
