Continued Study of Dwarf Galaxies Could Reveal Identity of Dark Matter Particles

In March, scientists announced that a flurry of eight objects that look to be newfound dwarf galaxy satellites of the Milky Way have turned up in observations by the Dark Energy Survey, an international astronomy project that aims to explain the universe's accelerating expansion. These miniature galaxies – the first discovered in a decade – shine with a mere billionth of our galaxy's brightness and each contain a million times less mass. Belying their diminutive stature, dwarf galaxies are big news for scientists.

Dark Matter Particles Colliding in a Black Hole Could Produce Strong Gamma-Ray Light

A new NASA computer simulation shows that dark matter particles colliding in the extreme gravity of a black hole can produce strong, potentially observable gamma-ray light. Detecting this emission would provide astronomers with a new tool for understanding both black holes and the nature of dark matter, an elusive substance accounting for most of the mass of the universe that neither reflects, absorbs nor emits light.

UC Riverside Physicists Search for Evidence of Majorana Neutrinos at the Large Hadron Collider

Neutrinos are subatomic particles produced by the decay of radioactive elements. They are the only known particles that interact only though the weak interaction, a fundamental interaction of nature. Lacking an electric charge, neutrinos can travel though the Earth unimpeded. Indeed, they make up the universe. Nonetheless, they are poorly understood. They have a very small mass – much smaller than all the other elementary particles – and why this is so is also not clear.

Vector-APP Coronagraph Reveals Image of Exoplanet Next to Parent Star

Astronomers have successfully commissioned a new type of optic that can reveal the image of an exoplanet next to its parent star. The ‘vector Apodizing Phase Plate’ (vector-APP) coronagraph was installed at the 6.5-m Magellan Clay telescope in Chile in May 2015, and the first observations demonstrated an unprecedented contrast performance very close to the star, where planets are more likely to reside. These results will be presented by PhD student Gilles Otten this Monday afternoon to the scientific community at the "In the Spirit of Lyot" conference organized by the Centre for Research in Astrophysics of Québec and researchers at the University of Montreal.

854 Ultra-Dark Galaxies Discovered in the Coma Cluster

A team of researchers from Stony Brook University and the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan (NAOJ) have discovered 854 “ultra-dark galaxies” in the Coma Cluster by analyzing data from the 8.2-meter Subaru Telescope. The new discovery, published in the June 2015 edition of the Astrophysical Journal Letters, surpasses the 2014 discovery of 47 mysterious dark galaxies by more than 800 and suggests that galaxy clusters are the key environment for the evolution of these mysterious dark galaxies.

SLAC Develops New Technologies for ATLAS Experiments at Upgraded Large Hadron Collider

Research with the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) has officially resumed: After more than two years of upgrades and tests, the world’s largest particle accelerator at CERN, the European particle physics laboratory, began on June 3 to collect data at a new record energy that could hold the key to new scientific discoveries. To keep up with the boost in performance, researchers at the Department of Energy’s SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory have developed new technologies for ATLAS – one of two experiments involved in the 2012 discovery of the Higgs boson.
