PanDA Workload Management System Evolves to Meet LHC's Full-Energy Collision Data

With the successful restart of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), now operating at nearly twice its former collision energy, comes an enormous increase in the volume of data physicists must sift through to search for new discoveries. Thanks to planning and a pilot project funded by the offices of Advanced Scientific Computing Research and High-Energy Physics within the Department of Energy’s Office of Science, a remarkable data-management tool developed by physicists at DOE’s Brookhaven National Laboratory and the University of Texas at Arlington is evolving to meet the big-data challenge.

New Method to Solve General Relativity’s Gravitational N-Body Problem

Recent experiments have successfully tested Einstein's general theory of relativity in a variety of ways and to remarkable precision. These experiments included spacecraft Doppler tracking, planetary radar ranging, lunar and satellite laser ranging, as well as a number of dedicated gravitational experiments in space and many ground based efforts. Researchers Study Mutual Influence of Magnetic and Geometric Ordering in Crystalline Spinel

A team at HZB has carried out the first detailed study of how magnetic and geometric ordering mutually influence one another in crystalline samples of spinel. To achieve this, the group synthesized a series of mixed crystals with the chemical formula Ni1-xCuxCr2O4 in which the element nickel was successively replaced by copper. They discovered through neutron scattering experiments at BER II not only how the crystal structure changes, but also uncovered new magnetic phases. The results were published in Physical Review B.

Planck Satellite Provides New Images of Rings and Loops in the Stars

A ring of dust 200 light years across and a loop covering a third of the sky: two of the results in a new map from the Planck satellite. Dr Mike Peel and Dr Paddy Leahy of the Jodrell Bank Centre for Astrophysics (JCBA) presented the images today at the National Astronomy Meeting (NAM 2015) at Venue Cymru, Llandudno, Wales.
