CQT Hosts ‘The Famous, the Bit & the Quantum’ Symposium to Mark its 8th Birthday

Every year CQT marks its birthday with a scientific symposium. This year the Centre turned eight, and we celebrated with the help of Serge Massar from the Université Libre de Bruxelles, Belgium and Stanley Williams from Hewlett Packard Laboratories, USA. They gave talks on "Quantum randomness" and "Computing beyond the Age of Moore's Law", respectively.

ICFO Receives AXA Chair for Quantum Information Technology Project

The AXA Research Fund has awarded to ICFO-The Institute of Photonic Sciences a Chair, which is both permanent and pioneering on a global scale, for a quantum information technology project that will focus on risks associated with data privacy. The Chair has a budget of EUR 1.7 million, bringing AXA's support to science in Spain to approximately EUR 10 million.

The Large Underground Xenon (LUX) dark matter experiment, which operates nearly a mile underground at the Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF) in the Black Hills of South Dakota, has already proven itself to be the most sensitive detector in the hunt for dark matter, the unseen stuff believed to account for most of the matter in the universe.

Physicists Produce First Helium Plasma in the Wendelstein 7-X Fusion Device

The plasma researchers’ efforts and patience have paid off. On December 10th, a good ten years after the assembly of the Wendelstein 7-X fusion device began at the Max Planck Institute for Plasma Physics (IPP) in Greifswald, physicists produced the first helium plasma. After over a year of technical preparation and tests, experimental operation has now commenced according to plan. With the Wendelstein 7-X, the world’s largest stellarator-type fusion device, the researchers would like to prove that this type of device is suitable for use as a power station.

Physics World Names Weyl Fermion Discovery Among Top Ten Breakthrough of 2015

Princeton University Professor of Physics M. Zahid Hasan is one of three physicists whose efforts to observe Weyl fermions, an elusive massless particle theorized 85 years ago, have been named among the Top Ten Breakthroughs of 2015 by Physics World magazine. Hasan shares the honor with Marin Soljacic, of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and with Zhong Fang and Hongming Weng of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, whose research teams independently found evidence of the fermion.
