Researchers Find a Way to Control Quantum System of a Diamond

Computers do not necessarily have to perform error-free calculations in order to provide perfect results – they only need to correct their errors in a reliable way. And this will become even more important in the future, when it is hoped that quantum computers will solve some tasks several times faster than conventional PCs with computing processes that are very efficient but also prone to disturbances.

ARO Awards $2.25 Million for Research on Quantum States of Superconducting Circuits

Plourde and a team of researchers from University of Wisconsin, Madison, and the University of the Saarland in Germany were recently awarded $2.25 million, $813,000 of which will go to SU, by ARO for their proposed project “Scalable Readout of Superconducting Qubits with Novel Superconducting Amplifiers and Metamaterials.”

Defects in Diamond Hold Potential as Quantum Sensors of High Pressure Phenomena

New research shows that a remarkable defect in synthetic diamond produced by chemical vapor deposition allows researchers to measure, witness, and potentially manipulate electrons in a manner that could lead to new “quantum technology” for information processing. The study is published in the January 31, 2014, issue of Physical Review Letters.

Novel Method to Cool Trapped Ions and Put Them into Entangled States

In Manas Mukherjee's laboratory at CQT, they have only recently trapped their first cloud of ions, but they've already got ambitious plans for what to do with them. Manas and his collaborators have proposed a novel way to cool trapped ions and put them into an entangled state. Such states can form the starting point for quantum computations or simulations. The work was published in Physical Review Letters in October.
