Magnetic materials displaying what is referred to as itinerant ferromagnetism are in an elusive physical state that is not yet fully understood. They behave like a magnets under very specific conditions, such as at ultracold temperatures near absolute zero.

LHC MoEDAL Experiment Narrows Possible Search Areas for Hypothetical Magnetic Monopole

In a paper published by the journal JHEP today (DOI: 10.1007/JHEP08(2016)067), the MoEDAL experiment at CERN narrows the window of where to search for a hypothetical particle, the magnetic monopole.

Physicists Successfully Detect Time-Resolved Supernova Signal in Biogenically Produced Crystals

Physicists from the Technical University of Munich (TUM) have succeeded in detecting a time-resolved supernova signal in the Earth’s microfossil record. As the group of Prof. Shawn Bishop could show, the supernova signal was first detectable at a time starting about 2.7 Million years ago.
