Astronomers have discovered a giant gathering of galaxies in a very remote part of the universe, thanks to NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope and Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE). The galaxy cluster, located 8.5 billion light-years away, is the most massive structure yet found at such great distances.

Astronomers Discover Stable Structure Around Massive, Newly Forming Star

Stars count lightweights and heavyweights among their number. All are born in clouds of gas and dust, but the more massive a baby star, the earlier nuclear fusion ignites in its core. And the radiation pressure produced here should really purge its surroundings and thus prevent the infall of matter which will allow the star to grow bigger. Some stars nevertheless manage to reach masses of more than a hundred times that of our Sun.

Danish Researcher Recognized for Outstanding Research on Processes Surrounding Formation of Stars, Planets

The Royal Danish Academy of Sciences and Letters awards a silver medal every year to a younger Danish researcher for an outstanding basic science achievement. In 2015, the silver medal goes to Associate Professor Jes K. Jørgensen from the Niels Bohr Institute and the Natural History Museum of Denmark, University of Copenhagen, for his research into the processes surrounding the formation of stars and planets.

Syracuse University Researchers Play Key Role in Micro Booster Neutrino Experiment

Mitchell Soderberg, assistant professor of physics, is leading a team of University researchers involved with a multinational experiment called MicroBooNE. Short for “Micro Booster Neutrino Experiment,” MicroBooNE is based at the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (Fermilab), near Chicago, where more than 100 participating scientists are expected to study the properties of neutrino interactions. On Oct. 15, they hit pay-dirt, observing MicroBooNE's first neutrino interaction.
