Hubble Helps Solve Mystery of 'Born Again' Stars

University of Texas astronomer Natalie Gosnell has used Hubble Space Telescope to better understand why some stars aren’t evolving as predicted. These so-called “blue stragglers” look hotter and bluer than they should for their advanced age. It’s almost as it they were somehow reinvigorated to look much younger than they really are.

Canada’s TRIUMF and Japan’s KEK Enter New Partnership

At a signing ceremony hosted on Friday, December 4 at the Canadian Embassy in Japan, the heads of Canada’s TRIUMF and Japan’s KEK signed a new partnership agreement to significantly enhance research collaborations between the two centres and promote joint projects in the areas of subatomic physics, accelerator science, and materials science.

Researchers Employ Quantum Mechanical Phenomenon to Design Tunnel Field Effect Transistor

One of the greatest challenges in the evolution of electronics has been to reduce power consumption during transistor switching operation. In a study recently reported in Nature, engineers at University of California, Santa Barbara, in collaboration with Rice University, have demonstrated a new transistor that switches at only 0.1 volts and reduces power dissipation by over 90% compared to state-of-the-art silicon transistors (MOSFETs).

SwRI Planetary Scientist to Present 2015 Shoemaker Lecture on The Calm Before the Storm

During the formation of the solar system, two waves of planetary bombardment likely played a significant role in planetary evolution. The calm between the barrages is the focus of an invited lecture that Dr. William Bottke, a planetary scientist from Southwest Research Institute, is presenting at the American Geophysical Union (AGU) Fall Meeting, Dec. 14, at 4 p.m. Pacific Time in San Francisco.

New Understanding of How Particles are Produced in RHIC Collisions

UPTON, NY-Peering into the seething soup of primordial matter created in particle collisions at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC, https://www.bnl.gov/rhic/)-an "atom smasher" dedicated to nuclear physics research at the U.S. Department of Energy's Brookhaven National Laboratory-scientists have come to a new understanding of how particles are produced in these collisions. This understanding represents a paradigm shift consistent with the presence of a saturated state of gluons, super-dense fields of the glue-like particles that bind the building blocks of ordinary matter.

Ferromagnetic Detector Detects Spin Current on Topological Insulator Surfaces at Room Temperature

Researchers at Chalmers University of Technology have for the first time reported the electrical detection of spin current on topological insulator surfaces at room temperature by employing a ferromagnetic detector. The findings have been published in the journal Nano Letters.

ALMA Discovers Tenuous Molecular Gas Cloud

Astronomers using the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) have discovered the most tenuous molecular gas ever observed. They detected the absorption of radio waves by gas clouds in front of bright radio sources. This radio shadow revealed the composition and conditions of diffuse gas in the Milky Way galaxy.

DFG to Continue Funding for Low-Energy Frontier of the Standard Model: From Quarks and Gluons to Hadrons and Nuclei

The German Research Foundation (DFG) will continue its funding for the Collaborative Research Center (CRC) 1044 "The Low-Energy Frontier of the Standard Model: From Quarks and Gluons to Hadrons and Nuclei" at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz for a further four years by making approximately EUR 12.5 million available from January 1, 2016 for research on fundamental aspects of the subatomic world. The participating researchers work at the Mainz particle accelerator MAMI while also developing experiments to run on the future particle accelerator MESA. In addition, the Mainz-based team will continue to cooperate closely with the BES III Experiment in Beijing in China.

Nest of Monstrous Baby Galaxies Discovered 11.5 Billion Light-Years Away

Astronomers discovered a nest of monstrous baby galaxies 11.5 billion light-years away using the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA). The young galaxies seem to reside at the junction of gigantic filaments in a web of dark matter. These findings are important for understanding how monstrous galaxies like these are formed and how they evolve in to huge elliptical galaxies.
