Researchers Suggest Quantum Nature of Hydrogen Strongly Affects Hydrogen Sulphur Superconductor

Researchers have found that quantum effects are the reason that hydrogen sulphide – which has the distinct smell of rotten eggs –behaves as a superconductor at record-breaking temperatures, which may aid in the search for room temperature superconductors.

NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope Finds New Clues by Observing Hot Jupiter

The last decade has seen a bonanza of exoplanet discoveries. Nearly 2,000 exoplanets -- planets outside our solar system -- have been confirmed so far, and more than 5,000 candidate exoplanets have been identified. Many of these exotic worlds belong to a class known as "hot Jupiters." These are gas giants like Jupiter but much hotter, with orbits that take them feverishly close to their stars.

Special Topic Highlights Progress in Unconventional Superconductivity, Topological Quantum Phenomena

Unconventional superconductivity and topological quantum phenomena are two frontier research directions of condensed matter physics. A special topic published in 2016(5) issue of Science China Physics, Mechanics & Astronomy collected several works covering important progress in these two directions. Superconductivity was discovered in Hg in 1911 by the group of Kamerling Onnes in Leiden (Holland).

New Study Shows Sun Should Experience Small Superflare Every Millennium

Earth is often struck by solar eruptions. These eruptions consist of energetic particles that are hurled away from the Sun into space, where those directed towards Earth encounter the magnetic field around our planet. When these eruptions interact with Earth's magnetic field they cause beautiful auroras. A poetic phenomenon that reminds us, that our closest star is an unpredictable neighbor.
