Weta Digital, a New Zealand-based digital effects company has its award winning supercomputer centre equipped with a unique, compact energy efficient technology that prevents unpredictable power grid disturbances.
Launched in 2008, Weta Digital has been a part of world-class projects like Avatar and other blockbuster movies. Its high density data center has received the prestigious international award for engineering excellence for an energy-saving and compact design. The design is just one-fourth the size of comparable installations and makes use of only 60% of the energy.

The use of two ABBactive voltage conditioners (PCS100 AVC) for protection against undesirable effects of power surges and voltage sags has also contributed to the energy savings of four percent in the award-winning design.
Weta Digital is one of the most reputed visual effects companies in the film-making sector. It has been a part of impressive and mega projects including the world’s popular science fiction movie, Avatar that is one of the top grossing films of all time. Nearly 60 percent of the movie is computer-generated, which requires huge amounts of data storage and processing resources. Such systems may also demand large current volumes to power the cooling systems and servers. The cooling systems play a vital role in preventing nearly 40,000 processors and 4,000 blade servers from overheating.
Richard Snow of Intellex, who is also the lead engineering consultant of Weta Digital suggested the use of ABB’s solution by comparing the PCS100 AVCs systems with other alternatives that require installation of uninterruptible power supply (UPS) units in large numbers. He stated that the AVC’s provide high system efficiency of 99% and energy-savings.
The PCS100 AVCs are not only efficient, but also compact and require only a small portion of the floor space of a UPS solution. They have a prolonged service life and require less maintenance.
The PCS100 AVC is an inverter based system that prevents occurrence of voltage disturbances in sensitive industrial and commercial loads. It provides load voltage compensation, continuous voltage regulation, and fast and precise voltage sag and surge correction.
